##COMMUNITY HASHTAG TIME ##

Hey hey! It's #sundaymorningsolo and #2023solochallenge game time and I am playing 💧🌲NATUROPOLIS 🌲💧 by @buttonshy

🌲💧 NATUROPOLIS is the latest instalment in the the stupendous 18 card patching, placement optimisation SPRAWLOPOLIS 🚗 series.

🌲💧 NATUROPOLIS follows the OG and AGROPOLIS 🐮 but has some tricks up its sleeve!

Solo gameplay remains the same smooth system - start by flipping 3 cards over to give your scoring objectives and target total score needed to "beat" the game. Then place one random card in the centre of the table as the starting card and draw 3. Then each turn, place 1 card horizontally over or adjacent to an existing card and draw a replacement off the deck! The game ends when the cards have all been laid. Then it's time to score against the goals for the game plus points for each of your largest territories (groups of matching coloured blocks) minus 2 points for each road (which are continuous sections of connected road).

Having twice as many negative points for roads compared to SPRAWLOPOLIS and AGROPOLIS definitely means my placement choices are geared towards having as few separate highways as possible. But that can mean sacrifices elsewhere! One of my goals also happened to reward points for meadow sections in my longest road but deducted points for any meadow road sections not forming part of my longest road so it was a road-centric session!

🌲💧 I love the colours in NATUROPOLIS as well as the ease of play - fast, portable, and mega crunchy!

🌲💧 I didn't beat the game this time but it just makes me want to try again! I also can't wait to combine everything together using COMBOPOLIS and ULTIMOPOLIS for an EPIC-OPOLIS or ENORM-OPOLIS haha! haha okay so the last ones aren't real but they could fit right in! haha 😂

But I am going to have to wait until we are back using a bigger table for that!

Hey hey! It's #saturdaymorningsolo and #2023solochallenge started by @kay_plays_games and me @favouritefoe where we try to play all the solo games in our collection!

Today I'm playing 🌲🔨 WOODCRAFT ROLL & WRITE 🔨🌲 by @deliciousgamesboard

🌲🔨This is a roll and write adaptation of WOODCRAFT which is free to download on BGG! I haven't played the OG but the theme really appealed and it looked like a faster, distilled version that would more easily fit into my daily playtime!

🌲🔨 This game only lasts 6 rounds and each round has just two turns. As such, I've got to quickly generate some combos that will start pumping out out resources and ways to get more resources!

🌲🔨 The rules are a bit vague in terms of iconography but each turn I either pick a dice from the market and put it into my supply or select an order from one of the 3 on display. Then I can complete free actions like hiring an assistant (using berries collected) which gives me special powers (some limited others unlimited) or completing an order. To complete an order you must have the dice and/or resources shown on the bottom of the card. Once completed, you earn the goodies shown on the left side of the card. Sawblades, glue and saw can be used to manipulate the dice - sticking numbers together/splitting them apart, and as you collect them, it's possible to achieve chestnuts which will let you buy VP bonuses that pay out at end game.

🌲🔨Between turns, I roll two dice (yellow and brown) and remove those two closest to those numbers from the market to simulate another player's picks. Then all the dice shift along one space in the market to make the resource picks different. At the end of the round, one order from those 3 on offer gets discarded and replaced. And at the start of round 4, the order deck is replaced by Set 2 which has higher value, harder orders to fulfil.

🌲🔨 First play and I think I got the hang of most things. Looking forward to my next game!

🎲Overview: dice dice dice! 🎲 Competition is rolling high (or low!) to grab the best catches of the day in this secret bidding, card grabbing, fast playing dice chucker! 🎲🐟

🎲Gameplay: This game can be learnt in seconds. Grab your player screen, your bunch of coloured dice which include D6, D10 and D20, and then form a random stack of 10 cards from the Fish deck. Boom! You are ready to go! 🎲🐟

Each round, players look at the Fish card they are trying to win. Each card has a VP value (hooks), and other requirements- usually a minimum target number and which specific dice numbers/types you need to roll to win it. 🎲🐟

Simultaneously everyone places the dice they want to use to fish for the Fish card from their supply behind their screen. When the screens are removed, the player who thinks they can get the required conditions using the fewest dice rolls first. If they don't achieve it, play passes to the next player(s) who bid the next lowest value of dice. First player to achieve the exact conditions wins the card and the next round starts with the flip of a new Fish from the deck! The winner is the player with the most VPs at game end! 🎲🐟

🎲First Impressions: this is simple, crazy luck based dice rolling to the max! Icons are easy to interpret and screens double up as a handy player guide. There's also an expansion adding more cards which extends the game. Predicting how many dice you might need, and factoring in the special moves that the D10/D20s can do is a chance to breathe but ultimately this is all about the rolls!

Keep rolling until you can snatch a catch!

🦆Light, hand management, set collection with a flockingly fun twist!🦆

🦆CUBIRDS is a super simple game to learn and the goal is simple; race to be first to collect 1 set (“flock”) of 7 different species of bird or 3 flocks of 2 different bird species.🦆

🦆The starting fenceline is a tableau of 12 cards (4x3 grid). You also start with one random flock in your collection but then it’s down to you and your hand management skills! Each round you begin with 8 cards in hand and one shows two numbers – this is the number of that bird species cards needed to collect a small flock (worth 1) or a large flock (worth 2). To pick up cards from the fence, you must place all the cards in your hand that match one of the birds on the end of a row. You then get to take the birds in between into your hand. If you then have enough of one bird type to form a flock, you can fly it home. 🦆

But you might want to wait to add more for a large flock later! Don’t want too long though as any player with zero cards in their hand will trigger a new round and you’ll lose all the cards you have in hand! If you can’t match any birds or don’t want to (as other players might scoop up a big birdie haul on their turn!), you can still lay cards but this time you’ll draw two from the deck. If you think birds in your hand are worth more than those in the deck, you can pass instead!🦆

This is a lovely, colourful, quick, race to collect sets. I have a Minecraft mad 7-year-old so I’m pretty used to seeing the world cubical. But nothing there compares to the boxy beauty of these birdies! ❤️And the set collection isn’t just your common-or-garden affair. Having to swap cards into the fenceline that might be those your opponents need is a deliciously light dilemma! We ❤️the sudden changes of fortune but your hard crafted hand can be instantly discarded by another player triggering the end of a round! And make sure you play this on a big table though – these birdies spread themselves out on the fence line rows. For us, that just means more cutey cubey birdies to admire! 🦆

💪 SCYTHE by @stonemaiergames @jameystegmaier - building up a new future in 1920s EUROPA takes a lot of hard work but the workers' LABOURS of the winning Faction will be worth it in the end - farming, industry, innovation, combat.......these engines are working overtime!

💪 SUNSHINE CITY by @playcoffeebean - Barry the Builder has a lot of solar panels to construct in Sunshine City. Angus the Industrialist is hot on his tail but luckily he has Larry the Lobbyist and Ida the Inventor to help him in his LABOURS!

🐙 LOST SEAS is a brilliant, fast playing, placement optimisation tile laying game. And it's so easy to learn! But don't be fooled - with a grid of only 16 tiles and scoring objectives set by each row and column, the crunch comes quick and fast as the decision and game space shrinks!

🐙 At two player count, each player drafts 1 tile from the pool of 5 tiles then discards one back to the box. Then the next player does the same. The 5th tile remains and forms part of the poor for the next round! 🐙

It has a tonne of different scoring objectives (double sided) so every game will give a new combination of marine elements to display (or avoid). And some are harder than others so you can always risk it for higher VP rewards! 🐙

I ❤️ VILLAGE GREEN and this has the same super smooth puzzly feel.

Using BGG as my alphabetical reference for all things mechanisms related, week #4 is 👏 ACTION QUEUE 👏

🐰 OH MY GOODS! EASTER EDITION 🐰 BY @lookout_games is an example of a game where you perform a sequence of actions on your turn.

In OH MY GOODS! we are using multi-use cards to craft engines that produce resources through building up production chains.

Before the market phase (which reveals the resource types your buildings need goods in order to produce more goods when built. And it's down to each player to decide whether their worker on their chosen building is going to work at full speed (efficiently) to gain two resources of the types shown in the market or whether their worker is going to be sloppy it its job (in which case it won't need to come up to the market's same high standards but likewise it will only gain 1 resource). But if you can afford to hire assistants, they can also get you pumping out resources each round which then gives you more goods to use before the 8th building is produced and the winner declared! This is definitely a game where the Hare beats the tortoise........if it can pump out enough, resources that is!

🍫🐰 This version is the EASTER Edition where our workers are bunnies and production is all about the sweet, chocolate treats of the season! 🍫🐰

I ❤️ cats and I ❤️ quilts and I ❤️puzzly spatial games (even though I absolutely suck at them!) so CALICO was always going to be a winner for me! 😻😻😻

😻 Playing CALICO solo is a very different experience in our home. When @shadowmeeplemedia and I play this game, we scrap like alley cats over the tiles. He watches my board like a hawk and hate-drafts me into pattern matching oblivion. Which is an intense experience when I struggle to "see" the space and how the patterns translate into the goals. But I ❤️ the fun frustration of our hatey-plays.😻

😻 Solo CALICO is a much calmer affair - there's no pace or pressure externally. I can sit and ponder and place/replace until I am less unhappy about placement than when I started my turn! haha. And the solo mechanic of removing the right most tile, sliding the remaining down, and adding two new tiles to the 3 tile pool is so smooth and works so well. 😻

😻 Knowing that the last tile is going to be gone at the end of the turn sounds a bit like insider information but it doesn't feel like that. Because if anything, it forces you to select it if you think you might need it later which could scupper your next turn's tile laying plans!

😻 Ooh I CALICO so much! I AP like a boss and can actually hear my cerebral cogs click and stutter haha. 😻

🐟 bluffing, betting, take-that, and hand management with simultaneous play

🐟 There's lots of treasure to be had on the bottom of the sea! But only one of us will get the 8 gold coins to win the game! 🪙🪙🪙🪙🪙🪙🪙🪙

🐟6 orthagonally connected cards (starter set or randomly selected) make up the ocean floor, and we have each got a hand of movement cards numbered 1-5 as well as 2 divers and our coin bag card and coin safe card.

🐟Each turn, everybody reveals a card showing how many movement points they are going to use. We then pop our divers on the corresponding ocean floor shipwreck cards before the blistering barnacles BARRAKUDA moves! If you're alone on a shipwreck card you get 2 actions on the card e.g. take gold or move gold into your safe, but if there's a party going on, the player who played the fewest movement points to get to their numbered wreck gets first action priority or can steal gold! But both get the second action.

🐟And gold needs to be in the safe to keep it away from sticky fingered divers! 🪙🪙🪙

🐟A Barrakuda card can be played which dictates which direction that bitey Barry moves. And if it lands on a card with another player's diver, they have their gold STOLEN! 😳🐟

🐟This is a light, fun, fast playing card game about predicting where your opponents will go,, whether they'll use their Barrakuda card, and trying to keep where you want to dive a secret! It's super easy to learn and we are enjoying how Bitey Barry the Barrakuda can be played to steal coins from each other! 🪙 🐟 🪙 🐟

🐟The wooden components, cards, and custom dice in this neat little box are really nice and colours really pop! Plus it's cool that you can randomise the ocean floor to make it easier or harder! There's also a team variant but we haven't tried that yet as we are enjoying the fun take-that too much! 😄

Hey hey! It's #saturdaymorningsolo and #2023solochallenge started by @kay_plays_games and me @favouritefoe where we try to play all the solo games in our collection!

Today I'm playing 🍄 BOLETS 🍄 by @olguioo for the first time!

🍄 This is a BYOS micro card game using just 9 cards and I'm off picking mushrooms for Granny! Each turn I flip a card and layer it over a previous card in order to set a path that gathers up the most mushrooms (red and blue). To move around I travel in straight lines until I hit an obstacle/item (including the edge of a card). As I collect mushrooms I get tokens (I only had mini pegs!) which represent additional rocks which I can place on the card I'm about to draw on in order to direct the path to a specific item or opening. Openings are also important as I need to end on an opening in order to pass into the next card once it has been placed (although those blocked by logs do become available if collected two mushrooms on the previous card). The final card is Granny's house - how many mushrooms did I deliver?! Probably not enough!🍄

🍄 Collecting Life points is helpful because any visible crows sap my strength! And if there's ever 5 visible or health drops to 0, I lose the game!🍄

🍄 Interestingly BOLETS mixes card patching/layering with pen based flip and write action. But the card you flip is also the card you write on! I haven't seen that before! Being spatially challenged, it took a few goes to realise what I needed to do, but bumping into things definitely felt familiar!!! 😂😂😂🍄

🍄 I'm pleased I finally tried BOLETS as I printed the pnp last year but have only just got round to trying it! 🍄

Hey hey! It's #firstimpressionsfriday🎲 started by the lovely @kay_plays_games and this week, thanks to the brilliant @rentshuffleandroll (who very kindly gifted us a temporary subscription to their excellent UK based board game rental service!), we are showcasing THE CASTLES OF TUSCANY by ALEA

🎲Overview: tile laying, set collection, hand management, territory development. open drafting, bonus collecting 🏰

🎲Gameplay: Played over 3 rounds (of variable length), you are building your territory by drafting and adding tiles which represent different land types and trigger different bonuses. Players have two boards - a territory board (where your tiles go when you're ready to place and trigger their effects) and a second board where your tiles are stored. On your turn, you can take a tile from the offer row but most store it and replace it with one of your own tiles - you have 3 stacks and whenever a player empties a stack it triggers round end. Or you can draw cards from the deck. And you need cards because you need 2 matching (or multiples of any type) cards to lay the stored tile to which it relates! When you lay a tile, it's special bonus triggers (including drawing bonus cards, adding tile storage spaces, and turning hexes wild). Plus, if you are adding tiles to a group of connected matching tiles, you'll get extra points on the red track - including added bonuses if you're the first to do it for that type!). The green track is special - that awards points for agricultural tiles which are added at the end of each round and accumulate (and also break ties!). The game ends when the 3 rounds are over and the winner is the player with the most points!🏰

🎲First Impressions: We ❤️ Castles of Burgundy by the Feld! And this draws a lot of art and mechs from that but distils it into a much faster, lighter game. But there are also differences- the accumulating bonuses are great little engines and it feels much easier to get lots of good stuff. It's not a punchy or crunchy as CoB so it won't replace it for us. But it was lovely to try (huge thanks to @rentshuffleandroll !) 🏰

It's Friday and we are joining in with #fridaycardbacks started by the brilliant @buryboardgames 😍👏

PIONEER RAILS by @drandagames is an excellent flip and write based in the Old West and uses the mechanic of poker hands to construct railways and gain lots of points en route!

The artwork on the fronts of the cards is gorgeous without doubt. But just LOOK at the backs of these beauties! I can just hear the steam hissing, and the wheels turning in this new age of locomotion commotion! 😍😍😍😍

Fronts of cards get lots of love but sometimes the flipsides are just as beautiful. So we like to think that this hashtag is to celebrate all those "B" sides that get overlooked!
